I’m tired …..
Not of eating protein, but of hearing about it.
Open Instagram and someone’s sharing their “high-protein breakfast.” and “Oh my god look at the insane macros in my meal”. Walk into a supermarket and every other product proudly announces how many grams of protein it contains. Even cafés have joined in. Starbucks now offers protein cold foam, and somehow that’s become a perfectly normal thing to order.
Don’t get me wrong. Protein is important.
But lately, it feels like we’ve stopped talking about food and started talking about macros.
Sometimes I just want to enjoy a simple bowl of my cheese pasta without wondering whether it has enough protein or feeling like I should’ve ordered the grilled chicken instead.
It feels like food has become something to optimise rather than enjoy.
Every meal has to be high-protein, low-carb, high-fibre or gut-friendly. Every snack needs a nutritional purpose. Somewhere along the way, eating became a performance and just a source of constant show off.
Ironically, the healthiest relationship with food probably isn’t about obsessing over one nutrient at all.
It’s about balance.
It’s about listening to your body, eating foods you genuinely enjoy and remembering that not every meal has to hit a nutritional target to be worth eating.
Protein deserves its place on the plate.
It just doesn’t need to be the main character in every conversation.
